What is the Mount St. Helens Super Adventure?

The 2021 Mount St. Helens Super Adventure is Volcano Scouting's first in-person event at the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center in more than two years. Participants will participate in a variety of outdoor activities for the chance of earning four (4) merit badges. Our team is excited to host everyone at Mount St. Helens in accordance with Washington state public health guidance.

What is included with registration?

All participants, youth and adults, will receive a program patch, t-shirt, and mask, in addition to all program materials, primitive campsite access, and cooked meals delivered to your camp.

Where is the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center located?

The Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center is located along Washington Route 504 within the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. It is roughly 40 miles from Castle Rock, WA and Interstate 5.


When does registration open?

Registration for the Mount St. Helens Super Adventure will open on Sunday, June 20 at 9:00 AM PT and close on Wednesday, July 28 at 11:59 PM PT. Registration may close earlier if our maximum participant capacity of 50 adults and scouts is reached prior to July 28, 2021.

Who can register?

Any registered youth or adult member of a Scouts, BSA troop within Oregon or Washington may participate. As such, a scout must be at least 10 years of age but not yet 18 years of age on the first day of the event (August 13, 2021). Adult Scouters must be registered adult leaders, with valid youth protection training, and be at least 18 years of age on the first day of the event (August 13, 2021). A scout must be registered by his/her parent/legal guardian who must also pay the associated participation fees. Units registering more than one participant can now create "Teams" within our ActiveWorks registration software that enables you to invite individual parents to register their scout under your unit cohort.

What is the cancellation policy?

Registrations may be cancelled for a full refund before July 28, 2021. A full refund excludes the third-party processing fee. All refunds will be remitted to the registration cardholder within 60 days.

Can a scout participate alone?

No. A scout must be accompanied by their parent/legal guardian OR participate as part of a unit that must include at least one adult leader and two scouts. All units must meet BSA Youth Protection guidelines.


What merit badges will be offered during the Mount St. Helens Super Adventure?

Volcano Scouting Staff have developed merit badge curriculum that utilizes a combination of both asynchonous at-home activities and synchronous in-person activities that enable a scout to earn all four (4) of the following merit badges:

  • Environmental Science*
  • Mammal Study
  • Fish and Wildlife Management
  • Soil and Water Conservation
*Eagle Required Merit Badge

How will you obtain unit leader approval for scouts to being work on merit badges?

At the time of registration, the scout's parent/legal guardian must provide the unit leader's name, email address, and phone number. This will enable our team to contact your scout's unit leader for merit badge pre-approval. Should any concerns arise, we will include the parent/legal guardian. It's always a great idea to make sure the unit leader is comfortable with the scout working on their desired merit badges prior to registration. We are also looking to resume in-person blue card certification, and as such, all blue cards must have unit leader approval prior to arrival at the event.

COVID-19 Information

Will participants and staff be tested for COVID-19 prior to or at the event?

At this time, Washington public health guidance requires all participants and staff to either test negative for COVID-19 no more than three (3) days prior to the event and quarantine up to the time of the event OR be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at the time of the event. Our staff and partners are evaluating all options and awaiting further guidance from state health officials, including on-site testing requirments.

Will participants be screened for COVID-19 prior to or at the event?

Yes, per Washington public health guidlines and BSA guidelines, all participants and staff must complete a self health screening prior to the event and daily while attending the event. Any individual who exhibits new and unusual symptoms will be asked to stay home or be removed from programming and sent home.

Will participants be asked to wear masks and social distance at the event?

Yes, with a few exceptions in accordance with Washington public health guidlines and BSA guidlines. All participants must wear masks indoors and outdoors when social distancing cannot be maintained. Given participants will be required to sleep in individual tents, masks will not be required when sleeping. Staff must wear masks when interacting with participants, outdoors when social distancing cannot be maintined, and when preparing food. Given the staff cohort has a designed indoor sleeping area inaccessible to participants, staff are not required to wear a masks when social distancing can be maintained or when sleeping in the staff-only area of the Science and Learning Center.

Will shared areas and surfaces be disinfected more frequently?

Yes, bathrooms, our kitchen, door handles, shared program materials, and other high-contact surfaces will be cleaned and disinfected frequently throughout the day to mitigate the spread of comunicale diseases.
